About Abstract Oil Painting Artists In New York City

By Timothy Wright

An abstract painting can easily brighten up any area in a home or business. This type of art fits in so well because the subject matter is fluid and interpretation is made by the viewer. Although not commonly completed in oils, there are abstract oil painting artists in the city of New York. These painters create museum quality art at prices that fit into any budget.

The process of painting with oils is a bit more difficult than with other mediums. This paint and the thinners and cleaners used with it do have a strong odor that puts off some artists. It also takes a long time to dry and impatient artists may decline to use this method for just that reason. Watercolor and acrylic dry in a very short time and are more commonly used.

There are artists that appreciate the fact that oil paint takes so long to dry. The artist can easily blend colors or change parts of the scene without worrying that it will dry before they are finished. This kind of paint will take a few weeks to dry. The colors are much deeper and richer than watercolors or acrylics, so it is worth the wait.

Oil painting is the classic style we see in many great artists of the past. This type of paint was created in the early 1400s. Famous painters such as Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci used this medium. It holds up well over time and does not fade quickly. Pictures from centuries past often still look fabulous because they were painted using this technique.

Although art connoisseurs all have their opinions, it is likely that the precursor to this type of art was the impressionistic style. Impressionists created pictures that some felt looked unfinished or undefined, although the subject matter was usually easy to discern. Artists like Monet used this then experimental style to showcase bright colors and how light plays upon a scene.

The expressionists and romanticists contributed to the development of abstract art. The expressionists exaggerated when creating paintings, using bright colors. Romanticists used realism but artists painted by emotion, producing scenes much more dramatic than real life. These movements challenged traditional views of what constituted art.

Throughout history, some form of loosely rendered art has existed. By nature, cave paintings are often abstract. Although is can be simple to determine what they artist was trying to represent, the renditions were often not realistic. Although true abstract art is not representative of a particular subject, primitive paintings still factor in this equation. Symbols and lines are also forms of art and are often seen in antiquated pieces.

The style of modern abstract art takes many forms. Some pieces of art are easy to interpret while others take time and thought to discern meaning. Both the artist and the viewer may have an opinion on whether or it constitutes art. Every person may have a different opinion. This is the beauty of this type of painting, and makes it fit in varying environments.
