Brilliant novel writer Rosemary Sutcliff is remembered for writing young adult books as well as fiction about history. Among her works include her adventure novel based in England known as Eagle back in the nineteen fifties.
Ninth region of Rome disappears after they march to the Northern Britain as a response to a rising among the Caledonian tribes. Four thousand men in number were lost. The father of Marcus happens to be one of the commanders of the Legion. Marcus is a centurion in a group of second Legion. He is heading to refresh his troop accompanied by his soldiers to one of bordering forts. Before long, local native tribe attacks his camp which acts as his base.
Marcus leads the defense of his fort against the native local tribes. He is badly wounded from the war. He wakes up after several days. He was able to save his men though his leg is injured and certainly unfit to continue serving his duty. This means the end of his career and his ambitions as well. He is taken by his uncle who lives nearby after ending his career.
He lives with the uncle with his leg slowly recovering. He attends Saturnalia Games. He buys a gladiator, Enter Esca after losing in battle. He is to serve him as his personal servant. The two discover that they share similarities. The father of Esca was a commander just as that of Marcus. They form a strengthened relationship.
There come rumors that Ninth eagle has been seen with other tribes. Marcus gives his servant freedom as long as he is to remain loyal. They leave together to determine whether the rumors are true. They reach a place called Dun which is led by Derdgian and stay there for a short while. Marcus attends a ceremony and is astonished to see a priest with the eagle of the Legion. The eagle does not have its wings. He knows very well the Ninth must have been killed trying to protect it. Marcus learns that it is not guarded and has an aim of stealing it. In the night they are to leave, Esca does steal it and hides it.
The two escape without many challenges until when the tribes finds them, halfway the journey. Marcus fakes it pretending to be in a state of confusion and accepts to be searched. They do not find eagle and so they go ahead to look for it. Esca goes back for eagle from the hiding place and takes it. They start running for their safety.
The two required speed in order to escape the attention of the pursuers. They feared everyone, even those who did not know them. The condition Marcus derailed their speed since he had not yet healed. However they could not dare to stop either. They encountered the pursuers once more. This time they were not many. The two had to hide in a nearby building to seek refuge. At last, they were successful with their journey.
Finally, they make it to the home of Marcus uncle. They forward it to him as they celebrate their victory upon returning it rallies the tribes against them. Unfortunately, the coming back of Eagle of Ninth is not enough to reform it. The achievement of Marcus is somehow diminished.
